CONVICTS SEEN
Police Close In For Capture
(Rec. 10.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 2. Police were closing inr on two armed escaped convicts in New South Wales today after the |wo men were seen by a grazier crossing a ridge in open country. Two truckloads of police armed with .303 rifles and automatic shotguns were rushed to the area to try to trap them. Police believe the 19-year-old convicts, who escaped from Berrima prison farm, about 150 miles south-west of Sydney, four days ago, have run out of food and may attempt to reach homes in the area. One of the escapers is carrying a rifle and police believe that he will not hesitate to shoot if trapped. People in the town of Bigga, 22 miles from the spot where the two men were seen today, spent last night behind locked doors with loaded rifles close to their beds.
The grazier, Ron Porter, of Bigga, followed the men for two miles on horseback before riding to a homestead to give the alarm. More than 100 police, assisted by a helicopter, have been joined by scores of armed civilians in one of the biggest manhunts in the history of New South Wales
