Women’s Hockey FIFTH-ROUND MATCHES
West Has First Defeat
The fifth round of the Canterbury Women's Hockey Association’s matches was played on Saturday with the grounds in very good winter order. In the main match Christchurch West, last year’s competition winner, suffered its first defeat of the season.
Results were:— Harewood 5. Christchurch West 1. University 3, Aranui 2. Digby’s 2, Rawhiti 1. Carlton 5, Teachers* College 1. Points, with a match yet to be played between University and Teachers’ College, are:—Harewood 8, Christchurch West 7, University 6, Digby’s 6, Rawhiti 4, Aranui 4, Carlton 3. Teachers’ College 0. HAREWOOD v. CHRISTCHURCH WEST
Harewood, by curbing some of its more robust tactics, is developing its potential as the city’s leading club side and thoroughly deserved this convincing victory over the solid, but ageing. Christchurch West team. For Harewood, Y. Turner, at leftback, was outstanding, her positional play, trapping and passing being of a high order. Her partner. C. Long, still has a tendency to rush her tackles. L. Watson, at centre-half, continues to show improvement but is handicapped by a lack of support from the wing halves, G. Turner and V. Watson, especially when forced to retreat hurriedly on defence.
H. Turner was the best forward on the field, showing up in some effective solo efforts and combining well with the inside forwards, B. Turner and M. Devine, both of whbm gave her good support. G. Merrin, on the left wing, dribbled well and revealed a quick, clean shot in the circle. Although West held Harewood to a narrow 2-1 lead at half-time. West weakened appreciably in the second spell. A. Ferguson, in goal for West, made a number of good saves. P. Hayles. at left-back, was solid on defence, but the half line was slow on defence and failed to supbort the forwards adequately on attack. A Donaldson was the best of the forwards. and although J. Fifield and J. Hall on the wings made some good Individual runs the team lacked its usual thrust in the centce. UNIVERSITY v. ARANUI
Although still below full strength. University had the better of the game to beat Aranui, 3-2.
For University, A. Gainsford. at right-back, trapped well and passed intelligently. 3. Comer, at centrehalf. was a tower of strength as usual. J. Gainsford, at right-half, supported the forwards well on attack and with D. Lunn was tenacious on defence. The forwards exhibited very little combination, much of the passing being mistimed and badly directed in mid-field play. In the circle, however, they shot at goal and followed in well.
For Aranui the backs, G. Hall and L. Farrant. intercepted well, but were fortunate that the rebounds from indifferent trapping were covered by a very sound half line. Aranui’s strength lies in this half line. A. Fleete’s cover defence at right-half was extremely good, and on several occasions she saved her team when all seemed lost. A. de Ville and T. Prestage broke up many University attacks by their positional play and good interceptions. S. McCaw was the best of a forward line which still relies on solo breaks rather than upon concerted effort. DIGBY’S v. RAWHITI This was a scrappy game marred by shepherding and obstruction, players showed an alarming inclination to tackle from the wrong side. Digby’s, lacking the leadership of D. Norrie in the centre, had a hard-won victory. B. Makinson made some good saves in goal, and the backs, R. Turner and S. Mcßryde, defended stubbornly D. Quinn was the best of the halves, showing up both on defence and attack. T. Tuhou, at in-side-left. bustled the opposing defence into making errors. For Rawhiti. L. Bayliss, in goal, played her usual steady game, but was eluded by one gentle shot. N. Lennie played constructively at leftback, and C. Herrett defended tenaciously and persisted in her efforts to direct play to the right. L. Todd was the beet of the forwards and her runs on the right wing always seemed likely to penetrate the Digby’s defence. CARLTON V. TEACHERS* COLLEGE With its forward line back to almost full strength, Carlton scored a good win over Teachers’ College. The present set-up on defence seems to be the most logical and effective Carlton has tried. It is to be hoped that no further reshuffling will be necessary. Both backs, H. Jones and G. Falloon. played soundly, and J. Brown, at centre-half, showed flashes of her true form. Her passing was of a high standard. The right flank combination of K. Cole and J. Davidson was most effective. At centre-forward, a newcomer, A. Karine, could be an asset when fit Teachers’ College showed its usual disposition to collapse in the closing stages of a game and again faded badly. J. Lynch, in goal, made some good saves, but lacked support from the backs, both of whom fail to appreciate the necessity of holding their positions against incoming forwards. M. Newbury was the best of the halves, b ut was tempted out to the sidelines far too often. J. Thomson was again outstanding, covering many of the team’s weaknesses on defence as well as making the openings for most of the forward play. Women's Six-A-Side Tourney Postponed The Canterbury Women’s Hockey Association’s six-a-side tournament, which was to have been held at the Hospital Corner today, has been postponed. - It will be held later in the season.
