MR M. H. WYNYARD

Mr Montague Harrison Wynyard, who was the first motorists’ representative on the Main Highways Board, has died at Onehunga. He was 88. Mr Wynyard was a grandson of Lieutenant-Colonel R. H. Wynyard, who was chief military officer at Auckland and for a period the Deputy Governor of the Dominion. In partnership .with Mr C. Sutty, Mr Wynyard was responsible for the manufacture in New Zealand in 1912 of a revolutionary. automatic flax scutcher, which gave an impetus to the flax industry. In 1891 Mr Wynyard became a solicitor in the firm of Messrs Wynyard, Wilson and Baxter, from which he retired in 1918 He was a member of the Auckland Harbour Board from 1916 to 1935, and chairman between 1929 and 1931. He was a lifemember of the Automobile Association (Auckland), and a member of the Main Highways Board from 1923 to 1954. He had also been a chairman of directors of the Hangatiki Lime Company, and a director of the Golden Dawn and Talisman Dubbo goldmining companies, and of Europa Petroleum 5 Mr Wynyard is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.

MR W. F. HAWKINS Mr Walter Frederick Hawkins, "the pearly king of Auckland," has died at his home in Grey Lynn. He was 92. A Cockney. Mr Hawkins came to New Zealand 49 years ago. He kept alive the "pearly” traditions of old London and on festive occasions in Auckland paraded in his pearly suit of many buttons.
