Lawn Tennis FRENCH TITLES QUARTER-FINAL
Miss Truman Beats Miss Courtiex (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PAR'IS, May 2ti. French spectators flocked to the No. 3 court today to see Miss Christine Truman (Britain) advance a stage further toward the title when she .beat Miss Paule Courtiex in the quarter-final of the French tennis championships.
Miss Courtiex. 21-year-old champion of France, roused the crowd when she led 5-1 in the second set, but “le geant Londonien*’ (the London giantess, as the French are calling her) fought back, brilliantly to win in straight sets. The four semi-finalists in the men's singles are Nicolo Pietrangeli (Italy), Neale Fraser (-Australia). lan Vermaak (South Africa), and the favourite for the title, Luis Ayala (Chile). Vermaak caused the biggest upset of the day when he beat the seeded Belgian. Jackie Brichant, in five sets. Britain’s Davis Cup player, Billy Knight, was beaten by Pietrangelli today in three sets. He won only four games during the match.
