£4 3s A £1000 In City

Christchurch city ratepayers will pay the biggest Drainage Board rate of those in the sewer extension area, although the percentage increase—l 9 per cent, over last year—is not as great as in Riccarton borough, Waimairi and Paparua counties. A total rate of £4 3s for each £lOOO of capital value will apbly in the city, an increase of 13s 3d on last year. It is made up of £1 3s lOd for the sewerage rate, £1 Is 3d for land drainage, £1 3s 5d for reticulation loans, Ils 4d for loans on major works and 3s 2d for the treatment works loan. Figures for other districts in the new sewerage area are:— Riccarton borough, £3 15s 7d, 21 per cent. increase; Waimairi county, £3 16s lid, 21 per cent, increase: Heathcote county £3 17s sd, 18 per cent, increase; and Paparua county, £3 Ils Id, 21 per cent, increase. The old sewerage area will have to pay £2 19s 7d a £lOOO of capital value in the city area, and £2 14s 3d in Riccarton, increases of 26 per cent, and 27 per cent, respectively.

In loan areas where sewers are not completed, the total levy this year will be £2 19s 2d in the city <2l per cent increase); £2 14s lOd in Waimairi <23 per cent.) and £2 15s 3d in Heathcote (20 per cent.). In addition to portions of the board's district where only a land drainage rate is levied, the portion of Halswell county within the board’s district will bear a land drainage rate of £1 Is 5d a £lOOO of capital value, compared with 15s 6d last year. Extra Expenditure

Beginning the year with a surplus of £78.381. compared with £98.187 surplus at the beginning of 1958-59. the board estimates its expenditure for this year at £678,576, an increase of £113,462 on the estimated expenditure last year, when actual expenditure reached £491,113.

The esr’mated rate levy of £600,195 this year, compares, with an actual levy of £469.513 last year, an. increase of £130,682. A fig increase in expenditure this year Is estimated for land drainage—£s6,746 more than last year—making the amount £253,301.
