“The Pre.s.c’’ Special Service DUNEDIN. May 26 Delarmo. one of the best jumpers in the south, strengthened his claims for Otago Steeplechase honours at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday with an attractive school over six fences on the course proper at Wingatui this morning. . ’•Delarmo "(Y?. -J. A-nderfon) was accompanied by Flying Doctor (B mtfshed in that order, Wilt there was not much between th>m at the end of the rhile -and a half ryn. - Delarmo has earned ton weight of 10-3 With some attrfcetive performances this season and he is 'unbeaten in his last threp races He mastered the Wingatui country this time last year when he easily disposed of the 1957 and 1958 Otaco Steeplechase winners. Culton and Formal, in the Dunedin Steeple chase on the last day of the meeting.
Delarmo was not engaged in the Great Western, the feature jumping event at the Riverton Easter carnival, hut the manner in which he won the Waiau and Riverton Steeplechases at the meeting suggested that he would have gone close to adding this race to his list of successes had he comneted. Flying Doctor is due to make a fresh start in the Tahuna Hack Steeplechase. The Airway gelding is an improved jumper since he last raced and on his latest schooling effort he could add interest to Saturday’s race Formal’s Prospects Formal has so far failed to show a glimpse of the form which gave him success in the Otago and the Wingatui Steeplechases this time last year, but hlg jumping this morning was rnych better than at Riverton br Invercargill The 10-year-old Lo Zingaro gelding was a disappointing fourth at Invercargill a fortnight ago. but the race would help to clean him up The three-mile journey and heavy going will improve his prospects. Sir Gerald has been hampered hy unsoundness or his record would have been much more impressive. A winner of the Otago Hurdles, he showed considerable promise over the bigger fences when he easilv accounted for Vocalize and Gabriel’s Gully at the 'Eastern Southland Hunt eariv last season, He is due to make a fresh start, after being off the scene fo^ : 12 months, in the Tabling Steeplechase. If his trainer, R. Heasley, can kegp him sound, he is likely to play an important part in crosscountry events later in the season Tarsus (R. O'. Cairns) earned a qualification ticket and drew attention to his prospects as a hurdler when he cutjumpe'd Copperfield (B. J Anderton) and Meridian (G. E. Lowryi at several hurdles in a bout over five flights. Tarsus js one of the big team of the Invereargill trainer. T. E. Pankhurst which came to Wingatui alter the . Waimate meeting. Copperfield won the Pukerau Hurdles at Gore in October, but he has not raced since the Dunedin December meeting. The Royal Chief gelding has been schooling well at North Taieri and may have been seen to better advantage had the pace been stronger. Copperfield and Meridian are engaged in the Greenfield Hurdles on Saturday.
