N.Z. Filly For A.J.C. Chairman

Mr A. Potter, chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, has a yearling filly in a Matamata stable, and she will probably race in New Zealand before going to Australia.

This filly is by the Australian sire Stokes. Her dam, Jean, was bred by Mr L. W. Storry. of Christchurch.

Jean is by Ruthless from Joyous by Chief Ruler from Lifelight, winner of 12 races including the Great Autumn, Jockey Club and Members’ Handicaps at Riccarton. L. W. Ford is training the filly for Mr Potter.

year-old mare by Red Mars from Sister Phil, bred by Mr R. G. O’Leary in 1953 and raced by him in partnership with his wife. On Saturday Sister Belle was the sixteenth favourite and paid £65 14s for a win. Golden Cabana's win was his first since he beat Panseron and Mama Mia in the President’s Handicap at Napier last June. There was another upset, but a minor one, in the Waimate Cup, won by the fifth favourite, Captain Hunt. Captain Hunt, which is owned by Mr J. O. Douglas and trained by C. C. McCarthy at Riccarton, paid £lO 6s 6d and £3 2s.

Seven weeks ago Captain Hunt paid £l2B 5s 6d when be won the Gimcrack Hack Handicap at Riccarton.
