RED CROSS CADETS DISPLEASE JUDGES
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 17. Standards were low at the national Red Cross cadet competitions held in Lower Hutt and Wainui-o-mata today, on Saturday and Friday. Speaking at the prize-giving eeremony today, Mr D. Peat, donor of the Henri Dunant Shield —one of the main awards—said: ’’The general standard was disgusting. It was one of the most Shocking displays I have ever •een.” Nearly 100 cadets from all over New Zealand heard their efforts of the previous two days described in scathing terms. A Lower Hutt doctor, one of the judges of the Bonner Cup contest. told them: “I’m sorry to have to say this, but I think you should get it straight from the shoulder. “You have been trained to save human life, and a 70 per cent, success (the top team in the Bonner Cup gained 74 per cent.) isn’t good enough—how would you like to be one of the unfortunate 30 per cent?”
Award winners were:— Bonner Cup.—Karori (74 points) 1, Gisborne (67) 2, Wanganui and Lower Hutt (36) (equal) 3. Henri Dunant Shield.—Gisborne (222 J points) 1, Wellington (220) 2, Paraparaumu (198) 3. Catherine Cup: Karori. Cason award: Gisborne. McLennan award: Wellington.
