STUDENT GIVEN PROBATION
Negligent Driving Causing Death

Found guilty by a jury of negligent driving causing death, rfarington Renulf Beresford Power, aged 19. student, was admitted to probation for two years by Mr Justice Shorland in the Supreme Court in Auckland. His Honour warned Power that probation was not an end to the matter, however. If he failed to comply with the conditions of probation, or if he failed to satisfy the probation officer, he could be brought ’before the Court and be sentenced on the original charge. The maximum penalty was five years. His Honour said Power’s speed at the time of the tragedy had been excessive in the extreme. Moreover the offence occured within six months of a conviction for dangerous driving when he had been disqualified.
