SURPRISE WIN BY BALI HA’I

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. May 16. Bali Ha’i, the New Zealand classic winner which was presented to the Queen Mother by Sir Ernest Davis after she had seen it win at Trentham during her visit to New Zealand in 1958 won his first race in Britain today. Starting at 10 to 1, he had a surprise win over the 8 to 1 on favourite, Vacarme, in the £l2OO Coombe Stakes at Sandown Park, Surrey. Ridden by Willie Snaith, Bali Ha’i beat Vacarme by three-quarters of a length. This was only his third race in England—he was off the course all last year with a broken sesamoid bone.
