Surrey, in a day of fluctuating fortunes at the Oval, led the Indians by 4 runs on the first innings, but the Indians finished 38 runs in front with all their second innings wickets in hand. The Indians had a shock at first, losing their remaining three wickets in 15 balls for the addition of 1 run this morning to be all out for 249. But they struck back quickly, dismissing both the Surrey openers for 4 runs, before K. Barrington and B. Constable shared a third-wicket stand of 169 in just more than two hours and a half. Then in the 45 minutes before tea, Barrington was run out for 85, Constable stumped for 91, and with E. A. Bedser and R. Swetman dismissed cheaply, the county was left with six wickets down for 200. However, spirited hitting by J. C. Laker and G A. R. Lock saw Surrey take the lead, but the last three wickets tumbled for a single and Surrey totalled 253.
