N.Z. SHEEP FOR SOUTH AFRICA
Ten Corriedale Rams From Canterbury More Canterbury Corriedale Sheep are on their way overseas —this time they are going to South Africa. In the consignment which sailed this week from Port Chalmers in the Royal Inter-Ocean Line’s vessel Schouten for Durban are 10 Corriedale flock rams. Five of these sheep are from the Taruna stud of Mr O. G. Evans, three from the Clifton stud of Mr J. F. G. Blakely, and two from the same stud from Mr A. J. Blakely. The New Zealand sheep are for Oak Valley Estates, Ltd., at Elgin in Cape Province. A few individual Corriedales have been shipped to South Africa in the past, but the latest xmsignment is regarded as breaking virtually new ground, and it is hoped it may be the forerunner of further trading to this quarter. It has followed the visit to the Union and East Africa last year of the president of the Corrieda'.e Sheep Society, Mr J. F. G. Blakely, and one of the society’s vice-presidents. Mr Duncan Ensor. The shipment is further evidence of the success of the society’s policy of sending leading officers overseas to visit potential markets for the breed. Already this year about 1000 flock and stud Corriedale sheep have been shipped tori. Kenya. y Substantial trading afeo followed the visit, to Peru in 1954 of Mr H. C. A. Sidey, and up to early last year sheep worth £BO,OOO had been shipped to that country Arrangements for shipping the rams to South Africa have been in the hands of Dalgety and Company.
