Bloat In Sheep

Bloat in sheep, as well as cattle grazing lucerne has been much more common than usual in North Canterbury in the last week or two. Mr E. G. Smith, instructor of the Department of Agriculture at Rangiora, said this week that the trouble was due to recent rapid growth which was sappy combined with it being constantly wet for the last week or two. As soon as there was a frost to harden up the feed he said it would be safe again and in the meantime all that could be done was for farmers to reduce the time that they had sheep on lucerne and to put them on preferably when it was dry, but this may look a tall order under recent conditions. Normally, he said that sheep seldom died on lucerne.
