Greater Demand Noted

New Zealanders have shown an increased interest in Dominionmade toilet goods and cosmetics, according to the figures released in the latest Abstract of Statistics.

Toothpastes, hair preparations, skin treatments, make-up preparations, and perfumes manufactured in 1957-58 all showed an increase in value of production compared with the 1956-57 figures—- £ 1,520,000, compared with £1,355.000.

Perfumes showed the biggest increase with production valued at £53,000 compared with £41,000.

Other products to show Increases (1956-57 figures in parenthesis) were: toothpastes, £353.000 (£306,000); hair preparations, £98,000 (£375,000); make-up preparations, £191,000 (£188.000); skin treatments, £296,000 (£295.000). A wide range of other chemical products manufactured in New Zealand also showed increases. Only one listed showed a decrease—the value of polishes production decreased from £349,000 to £342,000. This was offset by an increase in the figures for household and industrial cleaning agents—£4s9,ooo to £476,000. Other figures were: ink. £334,000 (£283.000); disinfectants and antiseptics. £330,000 <£249,000): insecticides and fungicides, £488.000 (£440,000); weedkillers. £651,000 (£475,000); stock licks and remedies, £678,000 £516,000).
