No More Racing For Americus

Americus, winner of six races and £4385, has finished racing. He is now eight, and his career has been much restricted over the last four seasons because of unsoundness, so his trainer V. D. Clutterbuck has decided against preparing the Booby Trap gelding for more racing. Americus has had only 12 starts in the last four seasons. Had he been sound he would have probably measured up to the class of the best stayers of his time. As a four-year-old he won five of his 15 races. Three of his victories at that age were the Midsummer, Dominion, and Sockbum Handicaps at Riccarton. Until just before his Sockburn Handicap victory he was raced on lease by Mr and Mrs H. C. Kidd, for whom he won £3295 He was then trained by G. R Pelting. He has done his racing since for Mrs L. K. Page, and his only return since he was a four-year-old was £2O for a fourth in the high-weight at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting last February.
