Standard Of Soccer

The standard of New Zealand soccer was ‘definitely improving,” said Ken Armstrong, director of coaching to the New Zealand Football Association, in Wanganui this week. Armstrong was conducting the North Island section of the New Zealand association’s “coaching of coaches” scheme. In raising the standard, he said, fitness had played a big part. This had been the quickest improvement. “When fitness and ability are allied we are really getting somewhere. “More and more young players are making names for themselves in big teams. This is a good sign.” Armstrong said that the standard could not help but improve with these factors. He cited the many cases of clubs which had taken up pre-season training.
