PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
For today’s match against Belfast, Old Boys will be without their flank forward J. Graham, who is being married at Ashburton today to Miss Sheila McGregor. Graham is a master at Christchurch Boys’ High School and Miss McGregor is a mistress at Christchurch Girls’ High School. ★ An intelligent display of constructive soccer was given by the former Canterbury and New Zealand player, K. Olley, of Western, in last Saturday’s match with City. Olley, for the last two seasons, has been dogged by a neck injury which restricted his heading and kept him on the side-line for much of the time. Now fully recovered, Olley is regaining top form. There is every possibility that he will be back as a representative later in the season. In the last year or so, I. S. Harvey, who seemed certain to have a brilliant career as a golfer, has
been much below his best. But last Sunday he showed the form of which he was capable, when he beat D. C. Hill in an inter - club match in Wel--1 in tyfon Hnr.
lington. Harvey is a member of the Shandon team which beat Hutt, the leading club. Harvey took only 31 for the last nine holes and won, 5 and 4.
The Canterbury Rugby Union's management committee, at its meeting this week.
approved an a p p 1 i c a t ion < from the Mar-j ist club for the I regrading of S. I R. Southall] from senior to | third grade. I Southall is< coaching the j Marist third] grade side and] it was ex-1 plained that
picuiicu mat the regrading was sought so that he could fill vacancies in the team should they arise. He has not played competitive Rugby since 1952. Southall was a member of the champion Marist team of 1950-1952, and he was one of the outstanding line-out forwards in the Christchurch senior competition at that time. He showed in a friendly match last season that he has lost none of his talent in this phase of play. David Tointon. son of the Christchurch senior soccer referee, Mr L. J. Tointon, has become one of the youngest referees in the code in Christchurch. Only 17 years of age, he is at present refereeing in the lower grades, but he has shown form which makes it likely he will be soon rivalling his father for senior fixtures. One of the most promising Inside backs in the Wellington Rugby club competition is Tony Clark, the University second five-eighths, and a brother of Bill Clark, the wellknown All Black flanker.
