Answers To Correspondents
Douglas Street, Timaru: Your cherry tree at 30 years old is showing signs of old age, and probably is in a damp, shaded position. The growths on the sample of bark sent in are of fungus origin often found on bush trees where dampness is prevalent. The only course would be to scrape off the fungus and spray with lime sulphur. “Lang May Your Lum Reek”: Your experience with seedling peach and nectarine stones is quite common, in that good fruit can be grown from the stones. The risk in growing from fruit stones is that inferior fruit may result, in which case several years have been lost in making the experiment. Many thanks for your kind appreciation, and list of gardening successes.
