TROTTING SOME LAD PICKED FOR TIMARU RACE

Some Lad is expected to improve on his fifth placing at Oaroaru last week when he contests the First Improvers’ Handicap, the first leg of the oncourse double at the Timaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Washdyke tomorrow. Some Lad is one of the best three-year-olds of the present season, with a win in the Riccarton Stakes and a second to Blue in the New Zealand Derby Stakes to his credit. Last week he looked in need of a run when paraded at Oamaru.

He was badly placed early, and later was pushed towards the rear. He was one of the tailenders at the two furlongs and, after an interrupted passage along the rails, he did well to finish fifth. He is certain to be a better horse this week and should be hard to beat.

Lucky Hazel created a good impression at Oamaru where she finished boldly from the middle of the field on the home turn to run Nadjehda to less than a length in the R. A. McDowell Handicap.

That was her first start since joining I. S. Sutherland’s team and it is expected that she will do better at short notice. She is a sound stayer and should run out the 14 furlongs at Washdyke better than most in the race. Bespoke is entitled to healthy respect in spite of his defeat into eighth place over 13 furlongs at Methven on April 18. He finished fast for third to Mighty Mina and Cheam in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes at Addington three starts ago. an effort which gives him a great chance of success in this race. Bespoke is a four-year-old gelding by Fallacy and he looks as though he will develop sound staying form later on. Placed At Oamaru

Lilt showed that she was close to winning form when she came home strongly from towards the middle of the field for third to Clackston and Hideaway at Oamaru last Saturday. Lilt has paced some sound races at times and she looks ready to extend her record at short notice.

Double Dale was not disgraced when beaten into fourth place at Oamaru as he had forced most of the pace in the C. Willetts Handicap. He has shown improvement in recent weeks and must be given a chance.

Geraldo, an easy winner over two miles at Oamaru, Stoker and Red Arion should do best of the remainder.

Hideaway, which has had one win and an exasperating run of eight placings from her 11 starts, should win again in the second leg of this double, the Second Improvers’ Handicap. Hideaway was left in front at the straight entrance at Oamaru last week and it was only in the last few strides that she was run down by Clackston. If she can be restrained until inside the furlong before issuing her final challenge tomorrow, she should be much harder to beat Sharwalo, an easy winner at Rangiora three starts ago and a good second to the promising Schnapps at Methven on April 18, should go close to making amends for his failure at the Amberley meeting. Sharwalo is a big. strong U. Scott gelding trained by A. C. Aymes at Ash-

burton. He looks set to win his way to a tight mark. Powersaw has finished third in his last two starts, showing speed on both occasions after covering extra ground. Better placed in the running tomorrow, he should be much harder to beat Four Peaks was a last-start winner at Amberley. He looks a likely type of pacer and could again take part in the finish. True Guest made up ground for seventh in her race at Oamaru after being near the rear for most of the race. She has useful speed and stays well. She will only have to begin smoothly, to be hard to beat. Red Belle, Gildirect, Cartoni and Space King are others expected to race prominently. The T.A-B. double will be run on the President’s Handicap and the May Handicap, Master Trick and Nadjehda forming a likely combination. There has been heavy rain in Timaru this week and the track is expected to be soft

LADY CARDIGAN DIES

Owner-Trainer In Hospital Lady Cardigan, which received a fractured skull and other injuries in a smash in the Beach Handicap at Forbury Park on May 2, died in Dunedin last Friday. Her owner-trainer, H. J. Smith, received a fractured thigh in the incident and he will be in hospital for some months. Lady Cardigan, an aged mare by Light Brigade from Lady Milne, the dam of Trixie Milne and Black Douglas, had shown great promise this season and from 19 starts she had had two wins and eight placings for £9OO 10s in stakes. Her wins were in the Cheviot Cup and the sprint race at Methven last month. Her two wins were clear-cut and she looked likely to win several further races in quick time.
