EXPLOSION OF VISCOUNT
Cause Not Yet Determined
(Rec. 7.15 p.m.) BALTIMORE (Maryland),
May 13. A mid-air explosion ripped apart the British-built Viscount airliner which crashed near Baltimore yesterday, killing 31 persons, Civil Aeronautics Board investigators said today. It would be “premature” to speculate whether the explosion was ins'de or outside the areoplane the investigators said. While many close to the scene opgnly wondered about the presence of a bomb on board, no one in authority would comment on it. American Associated Press reported.
The Viscount was equipped with weather radar, but Capital Airlines said the device was out of order.
“An explosive force could have resulted from structural failure of a wing that could pierce the pressurised cabin,’’ one C.A.B. official said. “The plane came apart in the air, at an altitude of between 7000 and 9000 feet, for reasons as yet undetermined.’’
