STOCK HEALTH RESEARCH

“Need For Team Of Scientists" “Research into these rather difficult stock diseases is not a one-man job or even a one-science investigation,” said Sir Walter Mulholland at the fourteenth annual conference of the North Canterbury provincial district meat and wool section of Federated Farmers yesterday. Sir Walter Mulholland, who is a member of the ’Meat Board, was commenting on two remits from provincial branches asking for more research to be done into stock health problems in the South Island. The two remits were later altered and combined into one. ‘‘The need for a team of scientists working in different fields of research is shown by the success achieved by the team which successfully investigated facial excema,” said Sir Walter Mulholland. “It has shown the value of having specialists in microbiology, botany and chemistry working on a common problem in association with the veterinary surgeons. It is seldom only a problem for the veterinarian and usually needs a team of men, including experts in sciences which may not even appear to be related with the problem,” he said. Toll of Diseases d “Every year these diseases • take some toll, greater or lesser, as the case may be,’’ said Mr C. A. MacDonald. “Research, to my mind, has been lacking in continuity. “There is a surge of interest and a lot of work is done when i outbreaks, occur, but when they ease off the interest is lost,’’ he said. > The chairman (Mr A. C. Wright) said that the question had al1 ready been discussed at length t by Federated Farmers and the electoral ■ committee of the Meat Board and the Wool Board. It 1 appeared that there were two and a half men working on South J Island problems but were based in the North Island. It was . necessary to specify the need for | research workers to be working i in the South Island, he said. “We want to get the research done,’’ said Mr D. W. Gray. ‘‘Leave the details of where and how the work is to be done to the research workers who will , be doing the job.’’ I The remit—“ That this conferi ence press for more intensive research into ill - thrift, white muscle and general stock ailments in the South Island”—was 4 carried.
