SPECTATORS AT AIRPORT
Facilities On Upper Deck
Boulevard-style morning and afternoon teas with tables, chairs and umbrellas are envisaged as an attraction for the proposed observation deck of the new air terminal building at Christchurch airport. The airport manager (Mr A. I B R. Jamieson) said yesterday that ( visitors to the airport would be, welcome to watch activity on the field from the deck. It would be up to the caterers to provide food and drinks up there if at all, but it was hoped that provision would be made. “It could be quite an attraction in calm weather,” he said. Mr Jamieson said that also under consideration was the provision of portable windbreaks on the observation deck. These would be made so they could be shifted about to provide protection from the wind prevailing at the time for persons on the deck. ‘‘We are not anticipating a charge to go on the roof. We want to encourage people,” he said.
Mr Jamieson said that the observation deck would be the roof of the overseas section of the terminal due for completion in October. A “farewell balcony” was in-1 eluded in the first stage, which was due for occupation later this month.
Access to the outdoor balcony would be through the main concourse and lounge of the domestic section of the terminal. Observation deck access would be from directly outside.
