FALSE RETURNS OF INCOME
£BOO Fine Imposed On Two Men
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 6.
Joseph Henry Cole and George Howarth, trading at the Kia Ora Fish Mart and the Kia Ora Engineering Company, were fined a total of £BOO by Mr R. M. Grant, S.M., today, on eight charges of wilfully making false returns to the Inland Revenue Department between 1947 and 1954. Mr H. Rosen said that the department began its investigation in' the middle of 1955. It assessed the income of the partnership during the seven-year period at £50,876. The amount that had been returned by the two men during the period had been £21,072.
The deficiency in tax payable to the department was £5393 in Cole’s case, and £5564 in Howarth’s case. This money had since been paid.
