PAPARUA COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP
Move To Rescind Motion Lost The Paparua County Council on Monday voted against Cr. R. C. Gilberthorpe’s motion that it should rescind its resolution made on March 2 to adopt a scheme for a council of nine members. Cr. Gilberthorpe said the resolution was not in the interests of the county. Reducing the council from 12 to nine members would increase by 25 per cent, the duties of the members. Every councillor was already on a committee, and if there were only |nine members each would have Ito “double up.” I There was a possibility of the business of the council being held 'up in the event of a quorum not being obtained, said Cr. Gilberthorpe. The changes would also throw a great deal of work on to the county clerk. He said he considered the change in numbers : would not assist in the scheme for | I amalgamation with the SpringsEllesmere county. He added that the change would bring about an anomally in the i urban representation. For instance, 'the valuation of Hornby would be i 'increased by more than £6OOO and ' its population by 1000, without . 'any change in its representation I |on the council. The motion was seconded by Cr. W. D. Baxter. There was little discussion and it was lost on a show of hands.
