R.A.F.TO BOMB MOUNTAIN
Bid To Destroy Equipment
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, May 5. The Turkish Government gave the Royal Air Force permission yesterday to bomb Suphan Dag, a peak in eastern Turkey, to destroy secret war material scattered there last week in the crash of a British transport aircraft on its way to Woomera, the “New York Times” reported today from Ankara.
The mission was expected to be carried out by tonight, and was decided upon after a team of volunteer mountain climbers reported that it was impossible, tc salvage the equipment, scattered in snow over a wide area. The climbers removed, or buried on the crash site, the bodies of the 12 victims of the crash.
According to the “Daily Express,” packs of wolves and bears menaced attempts by 17 Royal Air Force mountaineers to salvage the equipment. It said an R.A.F. Hastings had dropped 10 rifles, five revolvers, and boxes of ammunition in answer to an urgent call from the climbers. They had called for the arms when packs of wild animals started to close in on the wreckage of the plane.
ATTACKS BY CHINESE
Nehru “Greatly
Shocked”
NEW DELHI. May 5.
The Indian Prime Minister, Mr Nehru, replying to a debate on Tibet, told Parliament today he was greatly shocked by Chinese charges over the Tibetan situation in spite of Indian denials. “Very serious charges were made in an irresponsible way by leaders whom we had considered were advanced in culture, politeness and the gentler arts of civilisation,” he said.
“It shocked me greatly. They were said in excitement and I hope the excitement will pass.” Saying he believed his policy was right, Mr Nehru said any other stand would have made hundreds of millions of Indians angry
In spite of what had happened in Tibet. India would pursue her political policy of non-alignment and peaceful coexistence, with no military alliances. He also told a questioner that India’s support for China’s admittance to the United Nations would remain unchanged.
Nearly 9000 Tibetan refugees had so far been granted asylum in India, he said.
