DISCUSSIONS ON DUMPING
N.Z. Talks With Australia (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 14. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Skinner) is at present having talks with Australian Government officials on allegations that Australia is dumping butter. Mr Skinner said tonight he had already had discussions wit!: the Australian High Commissioner, Sir John Collins. He was commenting on a statement on dumping issued today by the Dairy Industry Information Service. He described the statement as a “very fair and moderate one.” Mr Skinner said the Australian dairy industry was not in “such a happy position” as the New Zealand industry. “Over there, they have a lot of problems with droughts and floods. The Australian dairy farmers have many more handicaps than our farmers. I’m quite sure we’ll be able to overcome the present difficulties brought about by the price of Australian butter on the British market.” It is understood there is little likelihood of New Zealand applying to have Australia named as a “butter dumping country” under the terms of the United Kingdom Dumping Act. Under the Act. New Zealand would have to prove Australia was dumping butter, and that this was having an adverse effect on New Zealand dairy produce. (Earlier Reference Page 16.)
