Lawn Tennis Gerrard’s Wins Encourage N.Z.
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, April 14. L. A. Gerrard, who won the Cumberland hard court tournament, has made headlines for New Zealand tennis. Indeed, one writer says his defeat of Wilson. Becker and Pickard, three of the leading contenders for places in the British Davis Cup side, which is generally expected to win this year’s European Zone, has “disturbed British lawn tennis complacency’’ and brought New Zealand well into the limelight.
His performance has certainly given considerable encouragement to the New Zealand side. He was a player relatively inexperienced in big tennis when he was in England two years ago, but his form of the last fortnight has shown what great strides he has made.
WINTER TENNIS COMPETITION Following is the draw for the first round of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s winter tennis competition next Saturday (April 18): North Linwood v. South Christchurch B; University A v. Sumner; University B v. Barrington; University C v. Woblston; South Christchurch A v. Beckenham. —Advt. Voluntary Compulsion. Drivers attached to Naval Headquarters in Paris were given a limited chance to assert their individuality by this circular issued by the Navy Ministry reI cently: “As from Monday. I quartermasters and naval drivers in charge of EMG EM registered vehicles in the service of Naval Headquarters. Paris, will have the opportunity to choose a distinctive colour for their vehicle.’’ The circular added: “This colour compulsorily will be black.’’ Reuter.
