TRADE WITH JAPAN

Import Controls Restrictive

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 14.

Japanese businessmen were quite content with the way trade negotiations were developing with New Zealand, but they wished to see the import restrictions “alleviated somewhat,” the new Japanese Ambassador designate. Mr Shiro Ishiguro, said on his arrival at Auckland today. He had not seen the import amendments announced yesterday, but he said he was delighted to hear something had been done. “Japanese businessmen just wish to be given the chance, and they hope the tight controls will be lifted,” he said.

The recent visit to Japan by the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) had aroused great interest among the country’s population, as had the visit in 1955 by Sir Sidney Holland, who was then Prime Minister, he said.
