OUTPUT RISES IN RUSSIA

First Year Of New Plan

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MOSCOW. April 13

Russia has exceeded her production figures for the first quarter of the present economic plan by 5 per cent. Most branches of the national industry registered even more impressive gains compared with the first quarter of 1958, according to figures released tonight by the Statistical Administration of the Soviet Union and quoted by British United Press. This is the first year of Mr Khrushchev’s grandiose sevenyear plan aimed at catching up and surpassing the United States gross production and smashing United States per capita production.

The greatest stride was in the constructive materials industry, which exceeded the plan by 25 per cent. The food industry reported over-fulfilment of the plan by 13 per cent. Increased output of steel, ferrous metal, oil, coal, electricity, machine building, and other basic branches of heavy industry were reported. The production of meat went up by 46 per cent., sugar 35 per cent., milk 27 per cent., and animal fat 20 per cent
