EXPANSION OF STORE

Rapid Growth Since 1929 The completion of Hay’s, Ltd.’s new shopping area marks nearly 30 years of continuous expansion since the store was first opened in Gloucester street in December, 1929. The first expansion, In 1936. when a men’s wear shop was opened to the east of the original premises in Gloucester street, was the forerunner of many similar new ventures. Property to the west was acquired in 1936 and another building still further west two years later. In the same year, Hay’s, Ltd., opened its first frontage in Colombo street. Four years later, shop frontages in Armagh street were acquired to give the firm’s customers access from three sides of the block. The Rink Taxis building was leased in 1947 and turned into extensive merchandising space. More property was bought within the block in 1951, and the Rink Taxis building was bought outright in 1958. A large central section of the store has also been rebuilt. This formerly abutted on to the Fletchers Building.
