Nature Study

Sir, —I must heartily endorse the letter of “Parent” about the treatment of live specimens Drought to school by children to exhibit on nature tables. To teach children to understand and appreciate nature is surely important, but to allow them to witness the complete lack of care given to these creatures while in school is surely only perpetuating the general idea that animals can be treated with complete callousness, amounting in many cases to wanton cruelty. My young daughter spends many unhappy week-ends thinking of goldfish slowly dying in pint jars of water, etc If there is no competent person available in the school to teach children the fundamental care of animals the children should not be encouraged to bring these “exhibits” to school.—Yours, etc., ANOTHER THINKING PARENT.
