Table Tennis INTER-SCHOOL COMPETITION

Association To Investigate

Efforts to popularise the playing of table tennis in secondary schools in Christchurch this year will be made by the Canterbury Table Tennis Association. This was decided at a meeting of the executive of the association. It was said that a large number of the players under the jurisdiction of the association were school pupils, especially in the lower grades. Other main centres conduct wellorganised and regular competitions I between teams from secondary 1 schools, and it is felt that the children themselves would be very interested in taking part in such a | competition. A committee under the • chairmanship of Mr A. B. McCallum ■ will investigate the possibility of : holding such competitions. | The Canterbury delegates to the I annual meeting of the New Zealand Table Tennis Association in Wellingi ton this week will support any move to have the new rules on the standardisation of bats brought into force in New Zealand immediately. The , rules, which were adopted at a meeti ing of the international controlling ’ body of the sport in Dortmund, Germany, recently,« provide for the i banning of any bat-surface com- , posed entirely of sponge rubber, and ! limitations upon the thickness of ; other types of bat covering. 1 Canterbury delegates will also ! introduce motions aiming at gaining i approval for the playing of national i tournaments on Sundays, and proi viding for the reduction of the size l of the teams for inter-association 1 Kean and Tagle shield contests from four persons to three persons. The chairman (Mr F. H. G. Johnstone) reported that it was not yet certain when the competition would 1 be able to start. The association’s central hall, which was burnt down towards the end of last year, was not yet completely rebuilt, and until I it was finished it would not be posi sible to start the competitions. Mr Johnstone said that he was soon to have a final conference with the i owners of the hall regarding the ! position, and until then it would not be possible to make any deci--1 sion with regard to the starting of the competitions. It was decided, however, that ‘ entries should be called for all grades . in the usual manner, so that players would be aware that the association still intended to hold competitions, and to start them as soon as possible. The tournaments committee was empowered to hire halls for ■ the holding of open tournaments : until the competitions proper were , started. Committees were appointed as follows: | Competitions, Messrs D. S. Milne. J. A. Dowie, A B. McCallum, and iD, D. M. Stewart: tournaments. Messrs McCallum. C. A. Clarke, M A. Cox and Miss M. Thomson; halls. Messrs Cox, McCallum, G. G. Johnstone and E. H. D Vince: social. 1 Mr R. T. Oakley, Misses Thomson. L. Bragg and N. Unsworth; publicity. Messrs Milne. Dowie. Stewart, and E. D. Kwok; finance and emergency. 1 Messrs F. H. G. Johnstone, McCallum. Kwok and Stewart; senior selectors, Messrs R. G. Hart, Kwok, and Stewart; lower grade selectors. Messrs Clarke, G. G. Johnstone, and , Vince.
