Conservatives Retain Seat

( N Z. Press 4 ssociation—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 10. Britain’s i.ruddle -of - the - road Liberals st; artled the nation’s two main political parties today by pushing /Labour to the bottom of the poll in a Parliamentary by-election at Galloway, Scotland. The Cori servative Government retained titoe seat with a good majority. But, although its poll was great/ >r than that of its two opponents, combined, its share of the total votes cast in the contest fell l»»y 16 per cent, compared with the 1955 general election. Labour’s share of the total poll fell by ri early 10 per cent. The G alloway verdict came as a shock to the Labour Party, and many G Conservatives tonight also saw th<» result as a warning to the Government. They think many of its narrowly-] ield seats will be in danger if the Liberals—-elated by recent big pd»lls—field a strong army of candid rates in the general election, which is expected by October at the Id /test.
