Minister Still Optimistic

New Zenlnnn Press Association» AUCKLAND, April 12.

Canadian success in winning important Japanese coal orders will not affect New Zealand’s chances of similar orders, in the opinion of the Minister of Mines (Mr Hackett).

There was plenty of room for other big coal imports to Japan, he said in Auckland yesterday. Mr Hackett hopes that a Ministry of Works report on the possibility of enlarging Greymouth harbour to allow bigger ships to take out economic quantities of coal will be ready within a few days. The only thing preventing the completion of negotiations with Japan was the shipping problem, he said.

A representative of Japanese coal-buying and using interests will arrive in New Zealand early next week for discussions with the Government.

Messrs S. Arnst (president) and T. Handisides (secretary) have been re-elected to office by ballot in the Canterbury Freezing Workers’ Union. The unsuccesful candidates were Messrs M. Jones and F. McNulty, respectively.
