All one needs is a paper with a chart on it, five squares by five, in which the letters called by the competitors, in turn, are entered. It is only when the last letter has been called, and the last square filled, that the problems start. Fiveletter words count ten points, four-letter words five points, and there are three points for three-letter words. Desperate efforts are made to justify peculiar combinations of letters, and all too often the dictionary brings triumphant shouts from the youngsters and confusion to the parental referee. Not many people would know, for instance, that vade means to fade, tway must be accepted as two, and routh as abundant. It is embarrassing to rule against such an unlikely word as zarf, only to find it is an ornamental holder for a hot coffee cup.
