HANMER SPRINGS’ DISCOVERY

Commemoration By Plaque A plaque commemorating the discovery of Hanmer Springs in April, 1859, was unveiled at a ceremony in the ground of Queen Mary Hospital yesterday afternoon. The plaque was provided by the National Historic Places Trust. The inscription on the plaque reads: “The Hanmer Hot Springs, known to the Maoris, were discovered for Europeans by William Jones, April, 1859.” The ceremony was arranged by the Hanmer Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, the chairman of which, Mr C. C. Dingle, was chairman at the joint unveiling of the plaque by Mr W. H. Gillespie, member of Parliament for Hurunui, and Mr A. A. Macfarlane, chairman of the Amur! County Council.
