SOUTH CANTERBURY RESULTS

Surprise Win By Celtic Over Waimate The downfall of last year’s Skinner Cup winners, Waimate, at the , hands of Celtic, was the noteworthy feature of the Rugby Union’s senior competiiton. Waimate looked a matcn-winning combination for three- ' quarters of the match, but Celtic rattled on nine points in five minutes midway through the second half ' to score a 9-6 win. Celtic owed its victory to a stubborn defence which , successfully withstood the brunt of a series of Waimate attacks in the first half. The only try of the match was scored by the Celtic half-back, J. O’Donnell. Celtic’s other points came , from two penatiles by R. Brennan, and for Waimate M. Watson kicked a 45-yard field goal and a good penalty. A well-drilled forward pack, led by J. Pierce and M. Scott, gave Waimate a feast of possession in the first half, and the team had a much more clear-cut advantage than the half-time score of 3-o—Watson kicked his field goal after eight minutes—would 'ndicate. Waimate led 6-0 early in the second half, but O’Donnell’s try and two penalties by Brennan, all within the space of five minutes, gave Celtic the lead. In the early match at Fraser Park, Old Boys had a 15-8 win against Temuka. Matched against a much heavier pack, the Old Boys forwards fought out the exchanges in determined fashion, and it was really only in the line-outs that they were beaten oy the Temuka pack. A Galbraith and B. Wilson and the lock forward, J. Hall, played well in the Old Boys’ forwards. For Old Boys, B. Wilson (2) and N. Williams scored tries, and R. Taylor, kicked two penalties. T. D. Coughlan and I. McMillan scored for Temuka. M. Sullivan kicking one conversion. At Fairlie. Zingari beat Mackenzie decisively by 22 points to 5. and, in the other senior match at Geraldine, the home side beat Star, 7-11.
