Banquet Menu In Maori

Sipping champagne between courses, more than 450 guests at the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce centennial banquet-ball on Saturday night ate their way through the menu from Tio-kutai Rangatira—oysters on shell—to kawhe pango mete kirimi—black coffee with cream. However, although the name of every course was written in the Maori language the menu also had the names of the dishes in English.

Choice of dishes took in the traditional hupa toheroa—toheroa soup—as well as the typically English creamed and roast potatoes—riwai kirimi mete riwai tunu—and apple pie and cream—aporo mete kirimi.

Among the guests at the banquet, held in the Addington Trotting Club kiosk, was the Prime Minister (Mr Nash), the Mayor (Mr Manning), as well as civic, military, church and commercial leaders, and delegates to the Associated Chambers of Commerce conference and their wives.
