LOW-COST HOMES

“Best Answer To Shortage”

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 12. The building of low-cost homes was the best way to overcome New Zealand’s housing problem, said the Minister of Housing (Mr Fox) at the official opening of the Papakura Parade of Homes yesterday. He said he was pleased to see that a limit of £3OOO had been placed on the cost of the homes on show. It was important that builders should provide good, low-cost houses for people in the lower income brackets.

The Minister said that this year the State Advances Corporation would be lending more money than ever before to a greater number of people. What was more important was that the loans would be going to many more people on lower incomes. There had been some criticism of the Government’s limiting the cost of homes qualifying for loans, but the objective was to build as many homes as possible at reasonable prices, he said. It was much better that four houses should be built at moderate cost than that three more expensive homes should be built for the same total sum.

“Housing is still a problem—a real problem,” Mr Fox added. “It is going to take us at least 10 years to really break the back of it.”
