MONEY BURIED IN TIP
Firm’s “Safe” In Rubbish Tin
(New Zealand Press Association! WELLINGTON, April 9.
Word flew around Wellington at midday today that the whole of an important company’s payroll had been inadvertently dumped at the City Council’s main rubbish tip at Houghton Bay, about five miles south of the city centre, and had been buried by a mammoth bulldozer that keeps the tip more or less level.
The rumour had a certain amount of real basis. Gillette (New Zealand), Ltd., whose safe is still being repaired since it was damaged by night marauders on March 26, have been hiding overnight cash and cheques in a rubbish tin.
This morning before any Gillette employee had thought to remove frem the rubbish tin about £2O in cash, together with nonnegotiable cheques, the tin was picked up by refuse collectors who later heaved the lot on to the Houghton Bay tip. It arrived just in time for the bulldozer operator at the tip to push it underground. The cash and cheques were later recovered after some strenuous digging through piles of refuse.
