N.S.W. Elections
Sir, —Mr Thomson helps me to make my point clear. Mr Cahill, opposed, as Mr Thomson shows, by all the better elements in New South Wales and leading “a stale and colourless party.” wins the day, mainly by one nebulous but well-advertised promise—equal pay for women. Sir Joseph Ward showed us the same thing when he converted a one-man party into a Parliamentary majority overnight, by the mere mention of £7O million pounds. Any established political party can work the trick and win any election, provided it (a) makes its financial promises attractive enough and (b) has the knavish ability to avoid keeping such promises.—Yours, etc., FAIR DINKUM. April 9, 1959.
