(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 9. The distance runner Murray Halberg has declined an invitation from the United States Amateur Athletic Union to compete in California between May 9 and June 20. Halberg said in Auckland today that he was very disappointed with his form at the end of the season, and was taking a complete rest for a month. “I will begin training again m May. but I only have my sights set on the Olympic Games in Rome next year. I will race only to qualify for a place in the New Zealand team,” he said. The Press Association reported from Wellington yesterday that the New Zealand Athletic Association had granted permission for Halberg to compete in America if he was available.
