TROTTING In £400 Cheviot Cup

Teryman is selected to win the Cheviot Cun the main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Rangiora tomorrow. Teryman will be bracketed with Fernside Lad, another member of C. C. Devine’s Templeton team.

Teryman paced a sound race f O r sixth in the New Zealand pacing Stakes at Addington a fortnight ago after losing ground at the start. The Van Dieman three-year-old was an impressive winner over one mile and three-quarters at Washdyke a fortnight earlier, finishing strongly from towards the rear at the straight entrance. The extra two furlongs in tomorrow’s race should be well within his reach. Fernside Lad raced at the recent Hawera meeting, but failed to impress in any of his races. Takitimu was an impressive winner over 13 furlongs at Greymouth last week at her most recent start and she may be the hardest for Teryman to beat. She met interference at her other start at Greymouth. Takitimu has been lightly raced and has had two wins and one placing from six starts. She has not yet come to the end of her run and should take part in the finish. Lady Cardigan, which has had six placings in her last eight starts, is long overdue for a win. She was placed in her two starts at Waikouaiti on March 28, finishing weH on both occasions after drifting in the middle stages. She should run 'out the two miles better than most in the race. Compeer could upset calculations. He has been placed only twice this season, but most of his racing has been in fields much stronger than that which he will meet tomorrow. His most recent placing was a second to Ebonite over 13 furlongs at Addington on February 14. He has proved his ability over two miles and must be respected. The others in this field have little in the way of worthwhile staying form to recommend them and Captivus and Firebell may be the pick of them. Schnapps Favoured Schnapps, one of the most promising pacers in his class, is expected to be the hardest to beat in the second leg, the Rangiora Handicap. Schnapps won most impressively at Orari in February at his first race start.

He was beaten into fifth place at Washdyke last month after failing to work clear in the straight, and he finished seventh in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes at Addington. He did not receive a good run in that race and should be harder to beat tomorrow. Ceremonial could offer most opposition to Schnapps. She lost her chance near the half-mile in the Pacing Stakes and finished near the rear. That effort can be overlooked as her previous form had been of a high standard. Hideaway has had a win and sii. pladJhgs in her last eight starts and she should be prominenfc She seldom paces a bad race aq| Should again go close to fiaishmg in the money. Stanway was impressive when he finished fourth in the Pacing Stakes. He was well back for most of the race and rushed up to join thSi leader on the turn. It was not surprising that he wilted a little in |he rim home. Stormlea has some sound efforts tocher credit in strong classic com-pany/-She disappointed a little when she finished eighth in the Pacing Stakes, but it will not surprise if she does better at Rangiora as the pace is not likely to be so" solid.

Patchwork, Lilt, Stoker, and Donna have all paced useful races at-times this season and they may

add interest to the finish of an open race. The on-course double will be run on the First Trial Handicap and the Southbrook Handicap, Lucky Surprise and Philonic forming a likely combination. Weather prospects are fair and the track is expected to be in good order. Fields, with form, for the doubles races are:—
