P.A.Y.E. TAX REFUNDS
Incomes Below £lO4O ‘ The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. April 9. Several months may elapse before the Government is ready to call for returns of income from persons earning £lO4O a year or less who may be eligible for a refund on P.A.Y.E. taxation. The Commissioner of Inland Revenue (Mr F. R. Macken) said that no action could be expected on claims for any refunds until the latter part of the year. He was commenting on reports that district inland revenue offices \vere already receiving income tax returns.
Returns might now be made by those earning over £lO4O a year who, under existing legislation, were required to make returns, Mr Macken said. Those earning less than £lO4O a year should wait until the Government had worked out the method of dealing with rebate claims from this group. “The method of making returns in the under-£lO4O group is subject to legislation,’’ he said. “It may be some months before the Government is ready to announce details.’’ Mr Macken said that no rebate claims could be dealt with until returns had been received from employers.
These returns were required by May 15 but he thought some firms might find it difficult to complete them by this date, particularly in the first year of the P.A.Y.E. system. Rebate claims from those earning over £lO4O a year would probably be dealt with first.
