RAIN DAMAGE AT ROTORUA

Stocks In Stores Ruined (New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, April 9. Thousands of pounds worth of damage was suffered by Rotorua as a result of the electrical storm which battered and drenched the town and outlying districts early this morning. The Mayor (Mr A. M. Linton) has offered the concert chamber as a refuge for residents forced from their homes, but so far all have found shelter in other homes. Water ruined hundreds of pounds worth of cement, seed, and manure in one stock and station agent’s premises, and milkbars and other small goods shops were flooded. Late tonight the Utuhina stream, the main drainage channel of the town, was flooded and still rising. Water from the stream had cut off the old Taupo road, one of the main through routes in the Rotorua town area. (Earlier Reference Page 13) Aerodrome Closed (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, April 9. Rukuhia aerodrome today was closed for the second time this week because of surface water. There was no real flooding, but planes were not allowed to use the aerodrome today. If there is no more heavy rain the aerodrome will reopen for N.A.C. traffic tomorrow. The aerodrome was closed on Monday. |
