GOLF MISS GRIGG FAVOURED FOR WOMEN’S TITLE
Maintaining excellent form in her two games yesterday, Miss Susan Grigg, a New Zealand representative, is in a strong position to win the Canterbury women’s golf championship being played at Shirley. After her fine display on Tuesday to head the other qualifiers by 17 strokes, Miss Grigg was little troubled yesterday to win both her matches and reach the semi-finals. In her semi-final today Miss Grigg will meet Mrs M. Evans, and in the other semi-final Mrs C. J. Ward will play Mrs R. G. Fdwards. The final will be played in the afternoon. Extended Winning, 7 and 6. Miss Grigg was not extended in her first-round match with Mrs J. H. Meikle (Nelson). Mrs Meikle won only one hole —the fifth—and four holes were halved. Miss Grigg scored a birdie at the seventh and was out in 38. The game ended when the twelfth was halved. Miss Grigg reached the semi-final when she beat Miss M. Kennard (Timaru), 6 and 4. Miss Kennard began confidently with well-placed approaches, and Miss Grigg was only 1 up at the turn. Miss Kennard took the first. Miss Grigg the second and third, and the long fourth and fifth were halved. Narrowly missing a putt at the seventh, Miss Kennard lost her advantage and the hole was halved. At the eighth Miss Grigg hit her drive into the pine trees, but after hitting several branches, the ball fell back on to the fairway. However, a three-putt by Miss Grigg allowed Miss Kennard to take the hole. The ninth was halved, leaving Miss Grigg 1 up.
Tightening up her green play and putting with more care. Miss Grigg showed her true form on the next tew holes. She recovered well from difficult positions, and consistently chipped close to the pin. She won the tenth in scratch, 5, and like an express, got a fine birdie 3 at the eleventh to be 3 up. Hitting the ball with perfect timing, she won the remaining three holes all in scratch figures, to win 6 and 4.
Difficult Day The Canterbury representative. Miss H. Buchanan, a former Canterbury champion, had a difficult day, and was eliminated in the second round by Mrs M. Evans.
Miss Buchanan had a very narrow victory in her first game against Mrs I. D. James (Timaru). She took the first three holes in scratch figures, and the fourth was halved. On the eighth, Mrs James sank a putt lor a birdie 3. Miss Buchanan took the ninth to be out in 40, and also the tenth, but had to concede the eleventh.
Miss Buchanan's putting left much to be desired, and it almost cost her the game. The twelfth was halved. Miss Buchanan won the thirteenth, lost the fourteenth, and the next two holes were halved. At dormie 2 Miss Buchanan had an excursion to a bunker at the seventeenth for Mrs James to take the hole. At the last, Mrs James had the chance of forcing a further hole, but hei mis-hit chip finished the game. Miss Buchanan won, 2 up. Mrs Evans played consistently well to eliminate Miss Buchanan in the afternoon. One up at the twelfth. Miss Buchanan went further ahead at the fourteenth, but after her lapses at the fifteenth and seventeenth, the players were all square on the eighteenth tee. Miss Bucuanan seemed set for another narrow win. when she chipped to within three feet of the pin. But a rather hurried putt hesitated at the lip and scurried round the side, for the hole to be halved. At the nineteenth, both players lay even to the green, and another putting failure by Miss Buchanan lost her the game. Another Canterbury representative golfer. Miss B. Murray, failed to survive her first-round game against Mrs R. G. Edward. Two-up at the turn, Miss Murray failed to maintain form over the last nine holes and was surprisingly beaten, 3 and 1.
