TROTTING Cheviot On-Course Double Looks Open

Patrons of the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Rangiora on Saturday will have a difficult task sorting out the on-course double, which will be run on the First Trial Handicap and the Southbrook Handicap, the latter race being run over two miles for trotters with one or more successes.

Few of the candidates for the first leg have shown any worthwhile form, and the majority of them have been lightly raced. Lucky Surprise, which finished second at Addington and Greymouth last month, could be one of the brightest prospects, but there is plenty of room for an upset.

A strong field of improving trotters will meet in the Southbrook Handicap and once again betting will probably be well spread. Philonic created a good impression when he won at Orari and Washdyke last month. In the meantime he failed at Waikouaiti, but that can be overlooked when assessing his prospects in this race. He looks to be one of the brightest prospects in his class and should make a bold showing. Philonic will be bracketed with Wairau Princess and Thumberlina.

The fields tor the on-course double are reviewed below:—

FIRST TRIAL HANDICAP, Of £2OO. 3min 56sec class. One mile and five furlongs. 000 AURELIA (7) It. Finished fifth on non-totalisator race at Addington on March 21 after forcing much of the pace. Looks a likelv improver and may be capable of surprising. 0000 BALFAST LADY (1) It. Finished second in this race 12 months ago. Has been well tried in the meantime, and makes little appeal. 0000 DREAM PRINCE (16) It. Has shown ability at trials, but so far has displayed little of it in his racing. 00 FOUR PEAKS (4) It. Has failed in his two starts to date, but has shown sufficient ability to suggest that he may one day develop useful form. 0240 GERALDO (15) It. Placed twice at Waikouaiti on March 28. but failed in the Otematata Handii ap at Kurow last Saturday. Later in the day he beat Epic Battle in the Omarama Handicap. Is not always solid, but could be a place prospect in *his race. 0000 GIRLIE AGAIN (9) It. Has done nothing to suggest she would have any chance in this field 004 KATANGA (5) It. Made up a little ground over the last halfmile of bis race at Greymouth on March 30 and finished fourth. Has been lightly raced and could be an improver. 43 LOVECHILD (8) It. Finished fourth in a non-totalisator race at Addington on March 21 at her first start in public. Then paced a fair race, tiring to third, over 12 furlongs at Kurow last Saturday. Form is better than that of most in the race, and must be considered. 0220 LUCKY SURPRISE (14) It. Second to Michael Junior over two miles at Greymouth on March 30. and later in the day wa ; . fifth over 11 furlongs after drifting early Looks to be one of the brighter prospects in this field. 030 NORICE SCOTT (2) It. Seldom shows much fight in her races and will have to improve to have much chance. 230 SARLITA (6) It. First start since being trained at Christchurch oy W. McDonald. Previous racing had been done in Southland. Will have to be taken on trust 00 SPRING JINKS (13) It. Should have benefited from his two races in the last month. Raced very greenly, but showed considerable abilitv. 0 SURE ANGELA (12) It. Always well back in a non-totalisator race at Addington last month when making her first appearance for the season 0 TOP NOTCH (3) It. Failed at Washdyke on March 14. finishing thirteenth over two miles Paced better at the Ashburton trials and mav make an improved showing. YOUNG GOUGHS (10) It. Gelding by Young Bob from a grand race mare in Gough’s Pride. Ic trained by R. G Morris. West Melton. 0012 TE PAR (1) 48. Won and was placed at Waikouaiti last month. Raced well at Kurow last Saturday, and even from his awkward mark looks to hold a good chance. Scratched: Kauroa. SOUTHBROOK HANDICAP. Of £3OO. Trotters. 4min 50sec class. Two miles. 1033 BILLY AGAIN (3) It. Win and placings were recorded at Greymouth early in January. Looks a likely type of trotter and should be hard to beat. 3030 CHANCES ARE (2) It. Won on this course in December. Has ' not always had the best of luck in her races. Is capable mare on her day and looks one of the brighter prospects. 1300 DIANTHUS GIRL (4) It. Won impressively at Blenheim in February and trotted other good races at the meeting. Made up ground for seventh at Washdyke last month. Looks better placed in this race and could upset calculations. 244 KAURANUI (6) It. Has raced

most consistently from awkward marks in recent weeks. Is solid and if given a good trail, should be in at the finish. 3001 MANDOZA (1) It. Gained a long overdue win at Waikouaiti on March 28. This looks to be a stronger field, but he may be placed. 0040 RESISTOR (5) It. Fourth was at Greymouth on March 30. Is not very solid and makes little appeal. 4000 GUILIANO (6) 36. One of the leading three-year-old trotters of last season. Has failed to race up to his best so far this season. Has the ability to beat most in this field, but is too unreliable. 000 INDIAN QUEEN (2) 36. Resumed racing this season after being off the scene for a long time. Has trotted fair races and may not be long showing worthwhile form. 0110 PHILONIC (4) 36. Created a good impression when he won twice recently. Broke in his race at Waikouaiti and finished tenth. Is better than that effort suggested and he looks the hardest to beat. Will be bracketed with Thumberlina and Wairau Princess. 0000 THUMBERLINA (5) 36. Has raced disappointingly lately and will have to improve to have any chance. ' 1000 WAIRAU (3) 36. Has failed in three starts since winning at Hororata', earlier in the year. 0000 REPRIMAND (7) 36. Has plenty of ability, but recent racing has not been impressive. Capable of better, but will have to be taken on trust. 3032 SURE MAGGIE (1) 36. Has been trotting sound races from awkward marks in unwieldly fields Must be given a chance. 0000 KILTY LAD (1) 48. Too un-

reliable to be considered. 1220 KARINGAL (1) 72. Even from this long mark he must be respected. Has trotted sound races in much stronger fields in

recent months. Could easily surprise. 0040 VAN CHEETAH (2) 72. Has at times trotted useful races, but should be safely held by Karingal. 0000 CORONET LASS (1) 120. Looks to be too far out of her ground from this mark to be a possibility. However, if there is any loitering early and she makes up her handicap without too much trouble, she may reach a place.
