CROWDING IN FINAL

Caduceus Nearly Fell

(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 9.

Caduceus, 6-4 favourite in Saturday night’s inter-Dominion Pacing Championship at the Show Grounds, was lucky not a fall in the last lap, according to his driver, Frank Kersley. “I don’t know how Caduceus kept his feet on the top bend,” said Kersley after the race. About one furlong and a half from the finish, Kersley said, he tried to weave Caduceus into the clear, but the field tightened up and he had to check Caduceus back to last.

The “Age” trotting writer “Ensign,” said he considered Caduceus was hampered several times, and it meant all the difference in the result.

“One driver ‘dealt’ with Caduceus whenever Kersley attempted to improve his position, and baulked the favourite several times,” he said.

Caduceus’s failure saved fielders a pay-out of about £70,000, but pre-post operators did not score over Young Pedro’s success. Caduceus’s part-owner, Mr Dudley Moore, who races the horse in partnership with his brother, said on Saturday night Caduceus would go to the stud in New Zealand after two or three ipore starts.
