ADMIRAL DUFEK’S FAREWELL

Shirley Boys’ High School Visit

The commander of the United States Antarctic Expedition for the last five years, Rear-Admiral G. J. Dufek, will make his last public appearance in Christchurch today only half an hour before leaving Christchurch Airport for the United States Honouring a promise made at a previous visit to the Shirley Boys’ High' School he will revisit the school this morning to address the assembly. A guard-of-honour will be mounted by members of the school’s cadet unit, and the guard commander will be Lieutenant R. O. McDowell. After inspecting the guard. Admiral. Dufek will informally address the assembly. If it can be arranged, a team of- bpys will then carry out the old British Navy custom of “rowing tjie Admiral ashore.’’ After an Admiral strikes his flag he is rowed ashore in his barge by his officers as a parting gesture, but on a shore station, where this cannot be done, the substitute of towing away his car by hand is carried out. If all goes well then Admiral Dufek will be “rowed” to the school gates on the first stage of his journey home.
