Canterbury Wins Points For Cup

Phe annual regatta at Kalapol was held on Saturday over a half-mile course on the north branch of the Waimakariri river. The six provincial clubs were all represented and entered 74 crews for the 13 events on the programme. Conditions were good.

The majority of the races were closely contested. There was a duel between the Canterbury and Avon rowing clubs, which won 12 of the 13 events between them. Both clubs were trying to win points for the D.C.L. Cup for the premier club in the province. The honours went to the Canterbury £ lu £*. ith 7 firsts » 4 seconds, and 6 thirds.

One of the most popular wins was that of Timaru club in the youths’ fours. This was the Timaru club’s first win for some time, and showed that this club is recovering. The Cure club also gained a number of the minor places, and showed that it is also recovering after losing its equipment in a fire 18 months ago. The senior fours race had special significance for rowing followers. In this race the Canterbury club’s senior and junior fours met for the first time this season. The junior crew, which has been selected for the provincial representative eight was expected to give its senior crew a strong challenge. However, the senior crew gained a threequarter length advantage on the start, and held it throughout the race. Points for the D.C.L. Cup won during the day were:—Canterbury 53.
